This illustration shows a Caparica fisherman at the water's edge, one of the coast's oldest and most enduring everyday scenes.
Costa da Caparica has always been a fishing beach as much as a surf beach. Before dawn, fishermen cast from shore or row out in flat-bottomed boats, sharing the sand with surfers and Lisbon day-trippers.
Thais drew the figure from observation, using a sun-faded palette that echoes the wooden boats resting on the beach. It feels like a quiet postcard from a Portugal that is still here.
